International Women’s Day is just around the corner. Originally inspired by a labour movement in 1908 when over 15,000 women went on strike in New York to protest poor working conditions. The following year, in honour of the women, the day was marked in the United States.
In 1910, whilst attending the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin suggested that the day should be celebrated globally – all 100 of the female delegates from 17 countries agreed and it was officially recognised by the UN in 1975. People across the world have been celebrating the event for well over a century, each year has a theme and 2022’s is #BreaktheBias.
The separation and loss of the past two years have meant that more than ever the women in our lives all quite frankly deserve a little something special. It’s a date in the calendar joyfully embraced by team Marie Claire as it provides a lovely opportunity to treat someone special or self-gift whilst also giving back and supporting women-first charities, organisations and institutions.

As part of founder Noura Sakkijha’s original vision to empower women to invest in themselves, Mejuri launched the Mejuri Empowerment Fund to support underrepresented women and non-binary individuals through higher education. Since its launch in January 2020, 37 women and non-binary people have received scholarships from the fund. Noura shared…
“I know from my own experiences that arming someone with education gives them optionality in the future to take control of their lives. There is nothing I believe more. And despite what we as women are often told, it isn’t and never has been selfish to take care of yourself and to invest in your future.”
In honour of International Women’s Day, Mejuri has collaborated with style icon Jenna Lyons, in a campaign featuring the next generation of international change-makers introducing two new takes on the classic signet ring. Bold in aesthetic it historically symbolises strength, autonomy and self-expression and is typically worn by men but is for any woman that can own their story and their own signature.
